In a new body of work, artist Ririn Yaxley used natural materials and upcycled objects and combined a large-scale installation, sculpture, and wearable art, under the name Merangkul (me-rung-kool) which means “embracing” in Bahasa Indonesia.

Within the work Ririn explored new connections to place through the process of textile felting. This process is Ririn’s way of Merangkul (embracing) Australia and connecting to the land and nature.

About the Artist

Ririn Indah Puspita Yaxley discovered the magic of felting in 2016 when she and her daughter took their first scarf making class at Gallery 294 Corowa, NSW.

Since then Ririn has developed her practice by researching and learning different felting techniques. Growing up in Indonesia, Ririn learnt about the history of Indonesian traditional textile and found the discovery of felting in her new home was fascinating. The ability to manipulate the fibre into unusual shapes and textures has resulted in works of sculpture, wall art, functional art furniture and wearable art.
