Bank manager hour refers to the time of day when the sun is setting and casting a golden light over the landscape. It’s the most appropriate time for the bank manager to visit the farm.
In this new body of work, local artist and farmer Courtney Young digs into her and her family’s connection to farming, land, and land ownership. Young’s colourful, layered and textured paintings merge memories and stories of farms from her childhood as well as that of her own children. Young is interested in the culture and complex history of farming in Australia, its whiteness, and the dominating paradigm of property and possession.
About the artist
Courtney Young is an artist and agroecological farmer based in Rutherglen, Victoria. Through her place-based practice, Young is interested in challenging prevailing colonial approaches to understanding and perceiving the landscape, and examining her identity and privilege as a farmer in Australia. Her paintings often border abstraction and are grounded in a love of colour, texture and layers.
