Limestone Carving for Kids with Noriko Nakamura
Carving workshop for kids at MAMA with artist Noriko Nakamura!
Kids can get hands on in this carving workshop, using fun tools like chisels and rasps, learning all about how a block of limestone can be turned into their very own 3D artwork. Noriko will guide the students to safely carve and cut the limestone, and teach them how to carve intricate details and make a unique piece of art.
What to expect
Noriko will take the students to see her sculptures in her current exhibition What our bodies bring to us (2026) at MAMA, then head back to the workshop to begin working on their own sculpture. And students get to take their finished artwork home at the end!

Meet the Artist
Noriko Nakamura’s practice consists primarily of stone carving, whilst also incorporating organic materials, video work, and watercolour. Her practice is underpinned by an interest in Shinto animism, which proposes that spirits inhabit all objects, places, and elements within the natural world. Nakamura was born in Japan and now lives and works in Castlemaine, on Dja Dja Wurung Country. Her works have been exhibited in institutional, commercial, and artist-run spaces across Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and Japan.
