Mat Vaughan: 5 Centimeters per Second

abstract blue painting with pencil

Process work
Supplied by Mat Vaughn

The first part of Mat Vaughan’s new work for the MAMA Atrium space is the process itself, with the artist working in-situ, in public from the beginning of December creating a massive new wall painting. Vaughan’s practice is grounded in process, in making marks and colour choices, layering paint and spending time with the evolving results trying to work out what’s going on. As Vaughan himself describes it: “Sometimes the mark needs to wiggle in order to fit; other times, it’s the mark that’s right and the space around it that needs to shift. Sometimes, with time, I find that it’s the clashiness of the colour or the awkwardness of the mark that makes it interesting, and because of that, it just works.”

And then from December 11 there is the finished work spread over the Atrium wall, accompanied also to one side by a smaller working palette of colour, ideas and notes – both a record of the painting’s creation and a set of clues to its viewing.

About the artist
Mat Vaughan lives and works in the North-East Victorian alpine village of Wandiligong. He studied drawing at the Victoria College of Arts, graduating with a BA Fine Arts (Honours) and conceives of painting as an active and ongoing process, always in flux and only paused or halted only at the moment of exhibition.
