Malcolm Jagamarra Maloney is a celebrated painter who has been exhibiting in Australia and internationally since the 1980s. This exhibition surveys the artist’s work from the 1990s to the present, taking in periods of prolific production, experimentation, and recent works that have seen the artist refine his approach to painting in response to physical challenges.

A key image in Malcolm Jagamarra Maloney’s work is the Lander River, on Walpiri Country, north-west of Alice Springs. Alongside stories of Dreaming, astrology, totems, and ceremony, the Lander River stands out as the defining image of Jagamarra’s longstanding painting practice, rendered across all periods of his diverse and dynamic output.

Jagamarra is a member of the Stolen Generations, removed from his family and Walpiri Country as a child. He lived in Adelaide, Darwin, and Alice Springs before returning to Walpiri Country as an adult and being initiated through ceremony. Learning painting and stories from his Uncle, Jagamarra then embarked on a painting career that took him and his work across the globe at a moment when Aboriginal painting was receiving great international attention for the first time. Jagamarra has continued to extend the possibilities of his painting throughout his career. He is a respected member of the Albury community, having lived here for many years.
