Learn the visual language and technical skills of image editing and photo manipulation to take your photography to the next level. In this practical course, students will shoot images that will be edited in class across the 8 weeks.

Course Outline
Week 1 Basic image adjustments: colour correction, toning, sharpening, cropping and distraction removal; software optimisation.

Week 2 Image organisation: create and maintain a filing system; prepare files for print and digital sharing; cloud and local storage.

Week 3 Shoot and edit, Textures and Layers: blend digital images in Photoshop; develop compositing skills using multiple image sources.

Week 4 Shoot, Portraits and skin: capture faces precisely, practice natural skin editing; shoot with lighting.

Week 5 Edit, Portraits and Skin: apply new techniques (dodge and burn, masking, repairing, healing and cloning) to refine last week's portraits.

Week 6 Shoot, Panoramas and HDR images: perfecting exposure, combine images to create high-resolution imagery.

Week 7 Edit, Panoramas and HDR images: overlap images to automatically align, stitch, and blend. Explore exposure, lens distortion and persepctive shifts.

Week 8 Edit, Photo Editing Q&A and Introduction to AI Editing: troubleshoot editing issues, explore AI-powered tools (general tips, combine traditional with AI editing, discuss ethical considerations).

What to bring:
Students are required to bring a tablet or laptop computer, charger and extension cord. A camera and tripod will be required on specified weeks.

Before attending the course, please research the type of editing software that you would like to learn how to use. It’s recommended that you have Photoshop, Lightroom, or Bridge/Camera Raw, but we can help with other software. Please download and install prior to attending week 1.

We will also look at the editing software by camera makers Nikon, Canon, Olympus/OM System, Panasonic, Fujifilm and Sony.

Meet the Tutor: Ben Eyles

Tutor Ben Eyles leaning on bricks


Ben Eyles is an Albury-based teacher, photographer and technical trainer with decades of experience.

He taught the Diploma of Photography and Photo Imaging and Certificate IV of Photography and Photo Imaging at Wodonga TAFE from 2014 to 2019. Prior to this, Ben worked as a staff photographer at the Border Mail where he was twice awarded the Best News Photograph of the Year.
