Join us for a conversation between artist Ali McCann and Nanette Orly, curator of the 2024 National Photography Prize.
Selected works on display from the series Joy continue McCann’s embrace of nostalgic and illusionary qualities of photography through the still life genre. The conversation will explore McCann’s unique studio-based photographic process, her interrogation of the picture plane, connected educational / artistic philosophies and the importance of doubt in artmaking.
Free event, all welcome.
About the artist
Ali McCann is a finalist in the 2024 National Photography Prize. She is a Narrm / Melbourne-based artist known for creating highly staged photographic compositions that test the illusionary nature of photography. McCann’s work is inspired by outmoded photography guides, amateur artworks, and 1970’s domestic and educational aesthetics of her childhood and adolescence that explore symbolism and sentimentality. This highly attuned studio-based process allows McCann to create alternative, temporal, spatial and psychological realms within the still life genre.
