6000 visit MAMA in first four days
More than 6000 people visited MAMA – the new Murray Art Museum Albury – in its first four days.
MAMA Director Jacqui Hemsley said visitor numbers had far exceeded expectations and she thanked the community for its support.
"We had hoped 2000 people would visit MAMA in those first few days, but to have about 6000 visitors was a great vote of confidence in MAMA."
Ms Hemsley said MAMA's Big Night Out celebrations on Friday night between 5pm and 10pm attracted up to 10,000 people.
"It was great to see families and people of all ages enjoying the celebrations and checking out MAMA for the first time," she said.
On opening day, Friday, about 3600 people visited MAMA.
"We had people travel from Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney - and they weren't 'invited guests' they were people who just wanted to see MAMA."
MAMA far exceeds Australian standards for accessibility and Ms Hemsley said one of her proudest moments was seeing visitors in wheelchairs, people of all abilities and families with prams and pushers easily navigating the new art museum.
"MAMA is free and it is for everyone. If you haven't been yet I urge you to come meet MAMA," Ms Hemsley said.
AlburyCity Mayor Henk van de Ven said our community had shown tremendous support for MAMA, from the $1.4 million in philanthropic funding raised so far to 6000 people going through the doors.
"Albury now has the capacity to show off blockbuster exhibitions of national and international prominence. That is something to be very proud of," Cr van de Ven said.
MAMA is open Monday to Friday 10am-5pm, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays 10am-4pm.
