Albury born artist Andrew Tenison reimagines history in Let Me Imagine You.
Inspired by a negative of a WWII serviceman found whilst rummaging in an op shop in Berlin, Tenison set out to explore the possible experiences the soldier may have encountered, recreating scenes and new hand printed silver gelatin photographs to go with the original.
Tenison is interested in the role photography plays in history, memory, and myth making. Photographs can enhance or deceive our understanding of events, losing context as they drift untethered into the future.
Part of the project brought Tenison to Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre, as he researched the lives of German soldiers, particularly the Luftwaffe that served in WWII, and those that migrated post-war to Australia. Bonegilla was used as part of the recreated scenes in some of the photographs.
The exhibition will open together with Sarah Goffman's Bridge to Asia and CATPC - the artists from the plantation. A portrait by Baloji, 2018, as part of our Autumn season.
