The Circus Collection was conceived and created by AlburyCity in partnership with the Albury Wodonga based Flying Fruit Fly Circus.
It began with 10 contemporary Australian artists (Anne Zahalka, Petrina Hicks, Ponch Hawkes, Kevin Mortenson, Ray Cook, David Archer, Arthur Wicks, Graeme Drendel and Nerissa Lea) taking up the opportunity to undertake a residency in Albury and immerse themselves in the world of the Flying Fruit Fly Circus.
For centuries the circus has been a rich source of inspiration for artists – its physicality; its endurance and discipline; the grace of the aerialists; the jugglers' dexterity; its colour and movement; and its aura of mystery and imagination, drama and inherent mayhem.
For our collection each artist took their own unique inspiration from the Flying Fruit Fly Circus and illustrated current concerns of circus life through narrative painting, sculpture, portraiture and staged photography. Their work gives the Albury community and the circus an opportunity to see themselves through different eyes and celebrate the achievements of both visual and performing artists.
