Ceramics for Beginners
Learn the fundamentals of ceramics in this comprehensive 7-week beginner's course and be guided on how to create a range of ceramic items such as mugs, bowls and flatware, using a variety of techniques including hand-building, wheel-throwing, decorating, firing, glazing and finishing.
Each lesson will begin with a demonstration by our experienced tutors, providing valuable insights and techniques. You'll then have the opportunity to practice and refine your skills at individual workstations, progressing through each stage of pottery production.
In the first few weeks of the course, each student will complete a hand-built project and wheel-thrown pot each class. In the final weeks of term, students will have the opportunity to work on their own projects, as well as glaze all their pieces.
Whether you're a complete beginner, or have some experience, this course offers a supportive and enriching environment to learn all about ceramics.
This course will be held at Albury TAFE campus, with students having access to the full suite of tools and equipment in the large purpose-built studio. Course fee includes all materials and equipment.

Meet the Tutors
Lauren Brown
Lauren is an artist, horticulturist and art educator who is motivated by creating and sharing art that is accessible, functional and playful. She especially loves to see her students discover new works of art and see the world differently.
Lauren studied at the Victorian College of the Arts, completing a Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) and fell in love with Ceramics during her Honours’ year where she spent the year focused on mastering clay.
She splits her time between her role as MAMA Studio Coordinator & Educator and her farm on Jaithmathang Country, Dederang, from where she runs a gardening business, private studio and enjoys hiking in the mountains.
Lauren combines her love of gardening and art-making to create ceramics that are infused with inspiration from the natural world. Her garden, local landscape and the Victorian High Country inform her creative practice through colours, textures, shapes and themes. Time spent outdoors is the perfect partner to her studio practice.
Alex Papasavvas
Alex is a passionate educator with a background in school-based art education and curriculum design. He discovered ceramics while studying Art Education at the University of NSW’s College of Fine Arts and was immediately drawn to the challenge of wheel work. Alex enjoys working with students and introducing them to new and exciting artmaking processes.
Alex’s interests in ceramics lie at the intersection of materials, form and function – drawing on the properties of clay bodies and glazes to support the design intention of the object. A nature-lover and birdwatcher, the influence of the bush and natural world is central in Alex’s design thinking.
