moMAMA invites you to ARTCHAT, an intimate discussion about art and art issues at be held once (or twice) a month at MAMA.

Our special guest on 28 February will be Dr Audray Banfield AM

Audray Banfield was born in Melbourne but it was her 33 years in Benalla that set her on a trajectory to become a revered and energetic arts leader in Albury Wodonga and Australia.

During her years in Benalla Audray not only brought up her children but involved herself in education and the arts. She helped set up the Adult Education Centre, the Special Education Unit, was active in Benalla Theatre group and the Benalla Arts Council. In 1968 she became the inaugural Director of Benalla Art Gallery. It was from here she became active in the Regional Galleries Association of Victoria and the Australian Galleries Directors Council.

In 1980 Audray was appointed as the inaugural Director of the Albury Regional Art Gallery a position she held until her retirement. This gallery was transformed under Audray’s leadership from modest beginnings to one of Australia’s premier regional galleries.

Audray continued to be active at state and national levels while she was Director of ARAG being appointed to the Regional Galleries Association of NSW, Ministerial Cultural Council-NSW Ministry of the Arts and the National Council of Museums Australia. She has also served on the Boards of The Flying Fruit Fly Circus Foundation and Hothouse Theatre National Artistic Directorate.

She has been recognised by Albury City Council with Award of Excellence in 1990 and 2000 and admitted as a Member of the Order of Australia in 1993. She received a Doctor of Letters (honoris causa) from Charles Sturt University in 2001(from the citation for the conferral of Doctor of Letters)
