MAMA to open Friday 2 October
MAMA will open its doors to the public on Friday 2 October at 12pm.
Part of Dean Street will be closed for what will be the biggest celebration Albury has seen. There will be international performers, live music, food vans, major projection works and public artwork in QEII Square.
MAMA director Jacqui Hemsley said entry to MAMA would be free on opening
weekend and continue to be free - except for major touring exhibitions. But people will need to book to enter MAMA on opening day because of the expected demand.
Details of how to book will be announced in early September. The full opening celebration program will also be announced in early September.
"People will travel to Albury from around Australia and even overseas to visit MAMA. That's going to be great for our local economy."
"There will be wonderous installations of light and sound, giant snails, street puppets and blow-up MAMA monsters."
AlburyCity Mayor Kevin Mack said it would be the biggest celebration Albury had ever seen. "We should all celebrate MAMA because it is going to be a great asset to our community and attract people to the city," Cr Mack said.
The opening of MAMA is about more than art, it's about great fun, memorable experiences, new ideas and how we look at our beautiful city.
MAMA's opening exhibition is Wiradjuri Ngurambanggu (On Wiradjuri Country) and features the work of five leading contemporary indigenous artists Jonathan Jones, Brook Garru Andrew, Lorraine Connelly-Northey, Karla Dickens and Nicole Foreshew.
In other exciting news, Ms Hemsley announced the Museum's restaurant would be called Canvas Eatery and be run by well-known Melbourne contemporary restaurateur Tim Tehan.
