Art After Dark - Advanced Beginner Painting
When: Wednesdays, 26 April - 28 June, 6.00pm - 8.00pm
Where: Studio within Commonwealth Growth Centre, MAMA.
Price: $190 ($171 moMAMA / Concession)
This course is perfect for students who have only completed one or two beginner painting classes, and are looking to extend their foundation skills to the next level.
Advanced beginners should have a grasp on:
- Tonal value
- Basic paint mixing
- Preparation of brushes and basic equipment
- Paint application techniques
- Understanding the colour wheel, and colour mixing
During this course students will extend their skills to include:
- En plein air (open air painting)
- Still life, landscapes, portraits
- Improving individual techniques
Tutor MariJana Southern approaches her role as both a teacher of technique and a creative mentor. She works with students individually to grow their technical skills, confidence and eventually develop their own style.
Students are encouraged to progress from Absolute Beginner Painting to Advanced Beginner Painting to Intermediate Painting. If you are new to MAMA's painting courses and are unsure which course to enrol in, please contact us and we will help you find the course that best meets your level of skill and experience.
This course utilises the same materials package as Absolute Beginner Painting.
You may bring your own materials to class, bring your existing materials kit from previous classes, or purchase a new materials kit. Materials packages will be available to purchase online or over the counter at shopMAMA until Monday 10 April.
MAMA Materials Package Includes:
- 1 x tube of the following colours;
- Lamp black.
- Titanium white.
- Cadmium red.
- Cadmium yellow deep.
- Burnt Sienna.
- Ultramarine Blue.
- 3 x filbert medium grade oil brushes (size 8 and size 4)
- 1 canvas board (10” x 14”) for each of the ten lessons
- 100ml of refined linseed oil
- 100ml of odourless solvent

Meet the Tutor: MariJana van Zanten
MariJana van Zanten (Southern) was born in Balranald NSW. She studied Fine Arts and Performing Art at Deakin University Geelong. MariJana then spent 25 years residing in the remote North Eastern Victorian community of Walwa and her art life consisted of portraiture, life drawing and landscapes. The first major retrospective of her work was held in Albury/Wodonga in 2013. An exhibition in 2014 followed and her latest show was in Feb 2016. She now resides in Albury NSW.
