For the last 6 years, Murray Art Museum Albury has invited applications from local artists to present an exhibition as part of the Open Call program.

In 2022, Open Call artists included Otis Burian Hodge, Julianne Piko, Mary Rose Riley, Vicky Luke, and Gillian Kayrooz. Each artist produced their work locally in the region and brought their own voice and perspective to our program.

“The works presented in our Open Call exhibition program continue to resonate with our visitors, they generate a lot of conversation and positive response from both locals and visitors from out of town,” says MAMA Director Bree Pickering.

"Our visitors enjoy seeing work that reflects the local region, and presents the perspective of local people. The Open Call program is just one way in which we ensure that local artists have a continued presence in the Museum."

Curator Michael Moran is looking forward to seeing this year's applications. "It's a great opportunity for artists to get their work in front of us. It is a key way for us to find out what is happening in the region, what artists are thinking about and making."

Along with individual artists, the Museum is encouraging artists to expand their ideas beyond solo exhibitions and present ideas including group shows and collaborations. Curators are also invited to submit applications.

In 2023 the Museum will present five new Open Call exhibitions, including a collaboration between four local mixed media sculptors, and a group exhibition of artists from Mercy Connect. Solo exhibitions will be presented by Courtney Young, Ririn Indah Puspita, and Sarah McEwan.

"Artists are given over a year to prepare their exhibition" continues Moran. "This gives time for ideas to expand and mature, and gives artists the opportunity to work with the full expertise of the Museum.”

Whether you have applied before, or its your first time, the Museum team encourages you to consider applying this year. Applications are welcome from artists in the Riverina Murray & North East Victorian regions.

"There is no greater joy for us than to know that we helped an artist lift their practice and produce an exhibition that not only makes them proud, but moves and excites our audience. That collaborative effort is the difference. It's the professional experience and support artists need, right in their home region." concludes Pickering.

Applications for the 2024 Open Call close 3 February.
